Josephine Mann, 72, of Denver, died September 2, 2020. She was born to the late Tito Garcia and Lettie Millett on February 4, 1948 in Denver. She was a member of the Western Shoshone tribe in Nevada. Jo graduated from Englewood High School, and Mesa State College in Grand Junction, with a degree in Early Childhood Education. She married Curt Mann in 1972, and they lived in Aurora and Denver.
Jo worked at Samsonite manufacturing in Denver for several years before leaving there to begin doing what she loved; training dogs and working with their people. She began by volunteering at the Denver Dumb Friends League, where she started working in adoptions, then moving on to conducting behavior classes for dogs and their people. Jo participated in numerous training seminars, increasing her knowledge throughout her career.
She operated a doggy day care center in Parker, and began conducting group training at the Parker Recreation Center. Jo worked for several years at the Aurora Animal Shelter. She owned and operated Dog Would Training, concentrating on training one-on one with people and dogs all over the Denver area. Jo specialized in 'problem' dogs, and was highly successful in helping dogs and people communicate, and please each other.
Jo had a gift for working with animals, and she used her teaching degree very effectively. She did what she loved, positive dog training, until her health began to interfere with her activities.
Her sister Marianne provided the following memory:
One of my fondest memories is how much she loved all animals, especially dogs. We had a dog 'given' to us by my son Tom. The dog was a honey brown Cocker Spaniel named Spencer. As time went by, I knew that Spencer needed a place where he could run, and not be home alone, since I was working. Jo found him a forever home with someone that lived on a farm. Jo kept in touch with the family, and they said Spencer was very happy and turned out to be a great hunting companion, and lived a happy life.
Jo is survived by her husband Curt, sisters Jennie Bustos, Marianne Alirez, and Frieda Cunane, plus many cousins, nieces, and nephews, and her furry children Oreo and Shorty. She was preceded in death by her parents, and brother Jerry Garcia.
Donations to the Denver Dumb Friends League in Jo's memory would be appreciated.
A memorial service will be held at a later time so her many friends will be able to attend.
