It is with complete sadness that the family of Karen Lee Purcell, of Aurora, Colorado, announces her sudden passing during the early morning hours of Friday, November 28, 2020.
Karen was born at Patterson Army Hospital, Fort Monmouth, Eatontown, New Jersey on September 21, 1961 during hurricane Esther. In August of 1975, at the age of 13, she moved with her family to Aurora. She graduated from Gateway High School with the class of 1979 and attended Platte College with a concentration in graphic arts.
Karen turned her interest to teaching young children and became a Day Care school teacher, as well as a cook for the students, many times including the kids in the preparation of the meal, teaching them her recipes. She continued her schooling in the field of Early Childhood Education, and received a director's license in the late 1990s. In all, she taught for over 38 years; most of her "kids" are now grown with kids of their own. She used her innate talents for creativity with her students and also in her passion for cake decorating and cooking. Karen was able to recreate recipes from her favourite restaurants and we were all willing participants. She taught herself to play guitar, she loved movies, but most of all she loved the Broncos.
Karen is preceded, in 1987 by her sister, Deanne Marie Purcell; in 2000 by her father Jospeh V. Purcell, a veteran of WWII, Korea and Vietnam; her mother in 2007 Ruth Deanne Purcell; and her brother Richard Wardan Purcell in 2009.
Karen is survived by her brother Stephen Vincent Purcell (Loretta) of Aurora; sister Patricia Lucienne Eckert (Charles) of British Columbia, Canada; and sister Debra Ann Purcell of Aurora, as well as many nieces, nephews, friends and loved ones.
A memorial will be observed later in 2021. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you please make a donation to the American Heart Association.
