Katherine Kay (Kathy) Barton, age 81, of Aurora, Colorado passed away on Sunday evening, January 23 in her home. Her passing was sudden and unexpected, but her family takes comfort in the fact that she left this world without suffering and went right away to enjoy her eternity in Heaven. Kathy is survived by her daughter Karen, her son-in-law Luis, her grandson Diego, her "adopted" daughter and granddaughter Leila and Hanna, her siblings Earl and Beth and their families, and a great many friends and extended family members.
Kathy devoted her life to spreading the word of Jesus and helping anyone who needed comfort or counseling. She grew up in Gem, Kansas, earned a BA in sociology and a master's degree in social work in the 1960s, and married G.J. Barton in 1965. After Karen was born in 1969, she chose to work at home taking care of the family and the household. Throughout her adult life, Kathy was active in various churches, playing the organ and piano as well as teaching and attending classes. Kathy was an extremely talented pianist, and she taught piano lessons for decades. When Karen was grown, Kathy worked for a few years as a social worker and then at Jay's small engine business, but when Jay retired, she chose to become a counselor. Kathy had many counselees about whom she cared very much, and she was always there to pray with anyone who needed it. She made herself available to the many people who counted on her listening ear and comforting advice, and she could often be found burning up the phone lines with friends.
When Jay passed away in 2010, Kathy continued to live on her own in Brighton as a strong, independent woman. In the fall of 2019, she moved back to Aurora to be closer to Karen and her family, but she kept herself busy with friends, church, and counseling others. She made friends and connections everywhere she went, and she will be deeply missed.
There will be a visitation on Tuesday, February 8 from 5:00-7:00 pm at Newcomer Mortuary at 190 Potomac St. in Aurora. Kathy wanted her body to be cremated, and we will have a celebration of life in March (details to be determined.) Please visit kathybartonmemorial.weebly.com if you want information about that service. The website will be updated as we figure out details. We are collecting photos of Kathy at kathybartonmemorial@gmail.com if you have pictures we can use in her celebration of life.
