Our much loved sister, cousin, niece, aunt, and friend, Kathleen Armour McCoy, passed away suddenly on March 10, 2021 at her home in Aurora, Arapahoe County, Colorado. Kathe was preceded in death by her father, Edward Hamilton McCoy, her mother, Dulcina Rossel McCoy, and her grandparents. She is survived by her brothers and sisters; Thomas McCoy, Jennifer Rahn (James), Holly McCoy (Michael Fallis), Jonathan McCoy (Sarah Neyhart), David McCoy (Glenda), 12 nephews and nieces, 12 great-nephews and great-nieces, cousins, and aunts.
Kathe was born on December 4, 1952 in Pittsburgh, Allegheny County, Pennsylvania. She grew up in Leawood, Kansas along with her five brothers and sisters. A much admired oldest sister she often entertained her younger siblings with wonderful bedtime stories.
After the family moved to St. Louis County, Kathe graduated from Hazelwood High School in 1970.
She received her Political Science Degree from Central Methodist College at Fayette, Missouri in 1974.
She then went on to earn her Masters degree in International Studies at the University of Denver in 1977. And she eventually received her Law Degree in 1982 also from the University of Denver.
While attending the university, Kathe fell in love with Colorado and the Rocky Mountains. Colorado became her permanent home for the remaining 48 years of her life. And it was there that she built a wonderful life and created enduring friendships.
She was an avid reader and a lifelong learner who never stopped wanting to know more. She was interested in everything and was always willing to share her knowledge (and opinions) with willing listeners.
She was an adventurer and during her teens and college years traveled to the Bahamas and Great Britain. Then later went on to visit Alaska, Canada, and the Galapagos Islands. She took a cruise to New Zealand and participated in an archeological dig. She adventured to Africa on a photo Safari. Even in her 60s she wasn't afraid to journey along the California Trail in a camper van.
She had an inherent love of nature, animals, the world, the arts, and preserving the environment. She adopted numerous pets from rescue shelters or wherever she found them and made a lifetime home for them. She supported many charities and organizations whose purpose was to preserve wildlife and the environment and she sponsored several children through Plan International.
She served as a docent at Denver's Museum of Nature and Science and as a volunteer and board member (eventually president) at Dinosaur Ridge for many years sharing her love of knowledge and opening the eyes of many schoolchildren, scouts, and family travelers to history and the world of dinosaurs.
Kathe was a generous, selfless, and compassionate person who made room in her heart for her many friends, relatives, and even total strangers. She will be missed by all.
A Celebration of Life for Kathe will be held at Newcomer's East Metro Chapel, 190 Potomac St., Aurora CO at 4:00 p.m. on Saturday, June 12, 2021. Following the service, everyone is invited to a picnic at the shelter in Del Mar Park at 12000 E. Sixth Ave., Aurora CO 80011.
