Kenneth Dale Marques 9/5/1942-5/22/2019
Ken, also know as Dad, O.G., My love, Kenny, Uncle Kenny, Herky left us suddenly on May 22. Ken is survived by his wife of 54 years, Stevie (Stephanie) son Clay, daughter Carrie and daughter-in-law Cindy. He was the son of Ben and Martha Marques and was one of 6 siblings. Brothers Benny, David, Jerry, Danny and sister Christine.
He was a Denver native, attending Asbury elementary school, Grant Jr High and South High school in southeast Denver. He graduated with the class of 1961. While employed at Gates Rubber Co, Uncle Sam called him to duty and he was inducted into the Army. His Army training was into an MP unit and he was with the 504th MPs. He married Stevie on 5/8/1965, lived in Olympia WA until his unit was deployed to Viet Nam in July. Upon his return home he entered an electrical apprenticeship program at Gates Rubber co. Completing his apprenticeship he decided to be his own boss and opened KM Electric. Life changed until he opened his shop KenMar Electrical Co and he operated that business until retirement 12/2010.
Ken crossed many people's paths through business, personal relationships, fishing, camping with the Big Horn Caravan 2 for 42 years and of course, his 'coffee crew' at McDonalds. His daughter-in-law liked to say he was a social butterfly and a friend to many. He was an avid fisherman and big game hunter. He shot many deer over 48 years, but never did bag that elusive elk. Not to say he didn't have opportunities, but since he was such a crack marksman he could have shot one quite a distance away, but as he said "it was so far away and on the side of a hill I'd have to eat it to bring it out."
Ken, Clay and Carrie are avid Pittsburgh Steelers fans (as well as the Broncos). Ken and Clay made 2 playoff game trips to Pittsburgh, one being January of 2017 which was the coldest game ever with a -17 degrees temp during game time. Thank goodness the Steelers won that game. It was a great time for father and son.
Ken and Carrie did a lot of father and daughter bonding during Carrie's trips to work 5 days a week. That time was so special for them both. Sometimes Ken would come home and tell me what they decided we would eat for dinner. Of course, that's what we had.
Ken was an avid gardener and each year carefully prepared the ground for the veggies and with Stevie planted the flower pots that they both loved. He saved some seeds from last year's tomato plants and planted those in peat pots. Stevie will be planting those little tomato plants and hope to have a bountiful harvest this year and continue to save seeds to plant again and perpetuate those special tomatoes.
One of Ken's favorite relaxing pastimes was sitting on the back patio watching the birds feed from the bird feeders, their interaction and the progress of the birds nesting in our birdhouses. Birds have nested in both houses and we'll have babies any time now. The backyard was truly his heaven on earth.
