Leo Solano was born on April 16, 1926 in Las Vegas, New Mexico, the son of Rogelio and Rosa Solano. He passed away on April 15, 2009 at age 82, in Denver, Colorado, after an extended illness.
Leo was reared and educated in New Mexico and enlisted in the U. S. Army at the tail end of World War II. He saw "Foreign Service" duty, as a truck driver in Alaska Territory (it was not yet one of the several states of the Union) and earned the World War II Victory Medal during his three years of active duty, as the Armed Forces were transitioning back to peace time levels.
He and his wife, Alice, whom he married in 1951, settled in Thornton in the Spring of 1954, at a time when "there were nothing but vacant fields as far as you could see..." to the east of Emerson Street, where they have lived for more then 50 years.
Leo worked at the Rocky Mountain Arsenal, then drove a mail truck for the United States Postal Service for 30 years, before retiring.
He is survived by his wife, Alice; daughter, Rosemary Solano; son, Kenneth Solano; granddaughter, Hayley Solano; two brothers, David Solano of Watsonville, California and Charles Solano, of Phoenix, Arizona; numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends.
Recitation of the Rosary, Monday, 7:00 PM and Mass of Christian Burial, Tuesday, 10:00 AM, both services at Holy Cross Catholic Church, 9341 Wigham St., Thornton, with Rev. Tom Coyte, Celebrant.
Interment, Fort Logan National Cemetery, Staging Area / Shelter "B", at 12:30 PM with Military Honors by the United States Army and the All Veterans Honor Guard.
Pallbearers will be Joe Rios, Ron Martinez, Jr., John Amaro, Phillip Reeser, James Solano and Dennis Solano.
