Lucy Ann Barros

March 4, 1949 — September 26, 2021

Lucy Ann Barros, 72 years old of Denver, Colorado passed away early in the morning on Sunday, September 26, 2021. Lucy was born on Friday, March 4, 1949 in Walsenburg, Colorado, USA. Her parents were Jose Damacio Barros of Arroyo Seco, New Mexico and Odelia Cordova of San Acacio, Colorado, who both preceded her in death. Our beloved Lucy's memorial service will be held on Friday, October 15, 2021 at 2:00 PM at Newcomer Funeral Home, 901 S Sheridan Blvd, Denver, CO 80226.

Lucy is survived by her three loving daughters, Anita Claire Reynoso Barros, of Lakewood, Colorado (49); Janine Marie Carson of San Diego, California (42); and Kathryn "Kat" McElroy of Dallas, Texas (55). Lucy was the proud grandmother of one grandchild, Ariana Renae Reynoso Barros and as of July, one great-grandchild, David Joseph Chavez III. Lucy is also survived by her son-in-law, Antonio Reynoso and daughter-in-law, Tamillia Graham-Carson.

Lucy was the youngest of five girls and the second-to-youngest of nine siblings, including four boys. She is survived by four out of her eight siblings: Simona Gallegos ("Aunt Sammie") of Las Animas, Colorado; Aberdeen Catherine Reza ("Aunt Birdie") of Denver, Colorado; Teresa Linda Barros of Denver, Colorado; and Richard Clemente Barros of Pueblo, Colorado. Lucy is also survived by one sister-in-law, Josephine Barros of Colorado Springs, Colorado. Close siblings who preceded her in death are Rebecca Griego, Joseph Barros and Sonny Barros. She maintained close relationships with her sisters and when they all gathered, everyone around witnessed the deep bond they shared. Lucy is also survived by a large tribe of loving nieces and nephews, great- nieces and nephews, and great-great nieces and nephews.

Lucy was a lover of all beings, including pets. She will be missed by grand-dogs Max and Bowser and by grand-cat, Ella. She was preceded in death by beloved pets Bella, Canella, Cookie, Marbles and Jesse.

As an active spiritual seeker, Lucy attended a variety of religious centers in her life. She was a faithful and dedicated student of the bible and was proud to follow the teachings of Jesus Christ daily.

Lucy worked professionally as a caregiver for her entire adult life and most notably was employed with the University of Colorado Health Center for over 10 years.

Lucy lived a long life of dedicated service and contributed time and resources to many organizations. You could find her in a red smock during the Christmas season volunteering as a bell ringer and donation collector for the Salvation Army. She gave generously to organizations dedicated to helping the underserved by donating annually to the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU), the Southern Poverty Law Center and Goodwill. She was also affiliated with Democracy Now and the Equal Justice Initiative.

From acting as the editor of community newsletters, to coordinating church women's group retreats to helping clean up after a family gathering, Lucy was usually the first to volunteer for a job that needed to be done. In fact, it was often difficult to convince her to relax and take part in events because she wanted to make a more enjoyable and efficient experience for guests and hosts.

Lucy loved to learn new things and earned several certificates from Emily Griffith Opportunity School in Denver in various subjects such as Self-Defense, Flower Arrangement and Computer Coding. She attended the Community College of Denver and always sought out ways to expand her knowledge.
Lucy was a ferocious and productive reader for all of her life, sometimes consuming more than one book a week. Self-described as a shy kid, she buried herself in books as a school-aged child and she excelled in her studies. Although she was strong-willed and passionate about her beliefs, Lucy sought out new things to learn and new ways of approaching the world. She literally loved to learn.

A creative and curious soul, Lucy spent the rest of her free time on her sewing machine making stuffed animals, tote bags and other creations. She was also skilled in needlepoint, knitting and origami. Lucy loved and excelled at arts and crafts.

Lucy was a lover of art and nature. She spent much of her time at Sloan's Lake and other nature destinations marveling at wild birds. As a bird enthusiast, she collected figurines and art that celebrated the winged species. Because she loved nature, her favorite color was green in all earthy shades. The gifts of nature: trees, flowers, birds, sunshine and water made Lucy happy. When she visited the swimming pool or ocean, she dove right in and loved to swim. Lucy always seemed at home in nature.

A fascinating and fun individual, Lucy had a pronounced laugh you could hear from any room if you were in the same building, a wide and beaming smile that you couldn't help but replicate, and an unexpected joke you could not help but laugh at. She was introspective, funny, intelligent, beautiful and loving. Everyone who knew her would likely agree that her unique personality could never be replaced.

An enthusiastic and excited dancer, Lucy was often the first to get the party started anywhere with a dance floor. She loved a variety of music and passed her love of music down to her children. Lucy was a gentle and fun mother. For instance, she often took her youngest daughters to the circus, movies and concerts. Lucy was the kind of person who could not sit still for long and had a passion for life.

Lucy Ann Barros will be heart-achingly missed by her daughters, siblings, friends, loved-ones and the entire family.
