Mary Lucy Pope, 88, of Aurora, passed away May 26, 2016.
She was born July 29, 1927 in Austin, Texas, the daughter of John and Alice (Stewart) Pope. She attended University of Texas.
Lucy is survived by her life partner, Karen Kulp; nieces and nephews, John B. Pope, Virginia; Stewart Pope, Virginia; Connie Goodman, Virginia; James Mize, Florida; Judi Mize, Georgia; Michelle Mills, Mississippi; and John S. Pope, Mississippi. She is preceded in death by her parents, John and Alice Pope, and brothers, Robert, John, and James Pope.
Lucy taught in the Denver Public schools for years. She enjoyed fishing, camping and photography. Lucy was an avid skier up until age 79. She was a volunteer for many years at the Winter Park Handicap Ski program teaching children how to ski. Next to skiing, football was her great American pastime. She followed her Texas Longhorns and showed her support with many a Longhorn t-shirt. The Broncos were her pro team and she knew everything about each player. However, when Denver played Dallas, she rooted for whoever had the ball! Lucy loved to travel, visiting her family and having many great adventures overseas. Lucy was very patriotic, always flying an American flag outside her home, contributing to the National World War II Memorial in Washington, DC in honor of her brothers' service and having their names added to the Navy Memorial Log. One of her favorite places to visit was Camp Hale and the 10th Mountain Division historical site near Leadville, CO.
In recent years, Lucy enjoyed attending services at St. Martin in the Fields Episcopal church in Aurora. From her wheelchair, she would see the sanctuary from the main entrance, her eyes would light up and a big smile would come across her face. Lucy would listen intently to the sermons and often times add "that's right" at appropriate times. She attended chapel services and hymn sing-a-longs at her Christian Living Community nursing facility.
Lucy and Karen celebrated life for over 46 years.
