Margaret was born in California on January 18, 1946 to Merle Allen, Jr. and Dee Laura Allen (née Victor). Margaret was an "Air Force brat," and spent her childhood living in the United Kingdom, Japan, Colorado, Delaware, and Alaska. Upon graduating from West Anchorage High School in 1963, she attended both Willamette University and the University of Colorado, graduating from the latter in 1967. She also earned a Master's degree in Counseling from the University of Northern Colorado.

Margaret met her husband Stephen "Steve" Greivel when both were student-teaching, and they made the Denver area their permanent home. Margaret married Steve in 1967, and they had three daughters: Melinda "Mindee," Nicole "Nicki," and Elizabeth "Beth." Margaret and Steve also loved to host summer family and friend gatherings at their house at Lake McConaughy in Nebraska.

Margaret taught Social Studies at the secondary level in Jefferson County with her longest tenure at Carmody Junior High School in Lakewood, CO. She found teaching rewarding, and took pride in fostering students to take an active interest and role in their communities.

Margaret loved traveling extensively with Steve, playing card games with her grandchildren, tea and cookies with friends, chocolate, all pasta, reading just about anything, bridge, and her dogs. Margaret Greivel was never afraid nor ashamed to eat the last brownie.

Margaret believed that one person can make a difference in the world, and also that community is important for individual development. She enacted these beliefs by volunteering for the American Association of University Women, the Jeffco Action Center, Meals on Wheels, the Second Wind Fund, the Colorado Governor's Mansion, the Colorado History Museum, and the Belmont Historical Society. Margaret also campaigned for numerous political candidates if she believed they would increase equity in public education, especially focusing on increasing representation of women in local politics.

In her personal and professional actions, Margaret's goals were to make a kinder and better world.
