Obituary of Margaret M. (Richmeier) Mealer
April 20, 1935 - October 23, 2020
Margaret (Margie), age 85, was born at the hospital in Hays, Kansas on April 20, 1935, to the parents of Bill and Angela (Von Lintel) Richmeier. Hays was the closet hospital to their farm in the German settlement of St. Peter, Kansas, where she was raised with 3 brothers and 6 sisters. She graduated from Quinter (KS) High School in 1953.
She married Don A. Engel in 1953, and they lived in Russell and Great Bend, Kansas. They had 2 sons, Donald (Jr) and Steven. The family moved to Denver in 1963, where she remained the rest of her life.
She married Delmer Jack Mealer in 1974, who tragically died in 1976.
Margaret had many jobs in her lifetime. She started at "Russell Stover Candies" when they first moved to Denver. From 1965 to 1974, Marge worked in the nursing field at several Lakewood and Wheat Ridge nursing homes and ended this career the last 2 years at the "American Medical Cancer Research Center" in Lakewood, CO. Due to a back injury, she had to change careers. In 1974, she began her housekeeping career of 39 years. She had many families that she took care of. Each of them treated Marge as part of their family, and she continued to stay in touch with many of them in her final years. In 2013, she took ill and was moved into the "Villas at Sunny Acres" care campus where she remained the rest of her life.
Based on her German heritage, Marge loved to Polka dance. In the mid 1960's and early 70's, weekend dances in Brighton and East Lake, CO (with many local cousins and family) were almost a weekly event. She loved these get-togethers and she was always the life of the party!
Marge enjoyed traveling, she made sure she could take 1 to 2 trips annually with "Specialty Bus Tours". She met so many new friends who she kept in contact with. One of Marge's proudest accomplishments was that she was able to visit all but 1 of the 50 states (Montana) and she also traveled to Canada. She specifically enjoyed several other trips she had with her granddaughter, Melissa. Another passion of hers was attending live performances at the "Country Dinner Playhouse" (now closed) and later, the "Arvada Arts Center", of which she was a member for many years.
Preceding her in death were her husband, Del; her parents Bill and Angela; her sister Agnes Geist, and brothers Valerian, Frank, Gerald; and 2 step grandsons-Ben Gaston and Jamie Leeper.
Surviving family includes her sons, Don Engel of Broomfield, CO and Steve Engel of Hays, KS; grandchildren-Melissa (Engel) Plett and her husband Matt, Joe Engel, Sara Engel and Amanda Engel; sisters-Sophie Breit, Rosalie Urban, Jean Graf, Patricia Graf and Roberta Rietcheck.
