Cutting short his quest to become a medical technician, he left college to join the Navy in service to his country. Having sustained an injury to his eye in childhood, which would have prevented him being able to enlist, he memorized the eye chart at the recruiting station to accomplish this goal. One of many that he obtained throughout his life.
After his discharge from the service, he met the Love of his Life, Theresa (Tess) Taposik, while working at a gas station in his hometown of Albuquerque. On June 14, 1947, they were married and began their 67 year journey through life together, bringing into this world four children and an abundance of love.
Surviving him are their children Cathy Sohn (Jim), Mari Johnstone (Brad), Chris Lewis (Joe), and Phil Lewis (Betty) , seven grandchildren and seven great grandchildren.
