REFLECTIONS OF MARVIN: A MAN FOR ALL SEASONS

Marvin James Smith (affectionately known as "Tootsie" ) was born November 9, 1952 in Denver, Colorado to the late Robert and Christine Smith. He was fourth of five children and the oldest of twin sons. Marvin confessed Christ at an early age and was raised in the Church of God in Christ.

Marvin was educated in the Denver Public School System where he attended Manuel High School and graduated from George Washington High School. After graduation, Marvin's quest for becoming a responsible young man led him to the Safeway Corporation where he worked for over 18 years. Marvin also spent several years in Southern California where he was employed by Gemini Industries in Santa Ana, CA. He later returned to his hometown where more opportunities awaited him at another major retail grocer: Albertson's. Marvin worked there faithfully for more than 20 years before he retired.

Marvin married the love of his life, Sharlot Yuvonne Palmer on November 30, 1985. To this union one son was born: Premore Ryan. Marvin was also the proud father of Keisha, Marvin James ('JJ"), and David (both deceased).

Once Marvin retired, he lived a full and vibrant life. He really enjoyed working in the yard especially tending to his grass and landscaping. He also enjoyed listening to old-school R & B music especially his favorite group-- The Whispers-- since he and his twin Melvin were often told they resembled the famous singing Scott twins. Marvin also had a keen sense of style and loved to "dress to impress". It was not uncommon to see Marvin and Sharlot in stylish outfits when they ventured out for "Date Nights" or concerts at the Winter Park Jazz Festivals.

Those who knew Marvin knew he never met a stranger. He loved engaging others in conversations about music, sports, family, and life. He particularly loved sitting outdoors drinking coffee and talking on the phone catching up with family, friends, and former co-workers. However, the joy of his life was cooking favorite meals for his granddaughters who loved their PaPa's breakfast. Marvin will always be remembered as an all-round family man who took his responsibilities of providing and protecting them seriously.

Marvin exchanged time for eternity on October 5, 2023 surrounded by his loving family. Marvin was preceded in death by his parents; his sons, Marvin and David; his brothers, Premore and John. He leaves a legacy to cherish his memory: a faithful, loving, and devoted wife of 38 years, Sharlot; son Premore Ryan; daughter, Keisha; granddaughters, Shiloh Yuvonne and Rylie Dawn; grandsons Kylin, Marvin III and Marvon; one sister Gloria Jean Love; and twin brother Melvin James Smith (Tootsie). Marvin's legacy will also be remembered by a host of uncles, aunts, cousins, other relatives, and many special friends.

"And the beat goes on...just like my love, everlasting." (The Whispers, 1979)
