Mary Giboney

March 20, 1925 — December 5, 2020

On December 5, 2020, Mary Giboney passed away peacefully at her home in Aurora, Colorado. She was Catholic, and transitioned while listening to her favorite artist, Mahalia Jackson.

Mary was born in Cape Girardeau, Missouri on March, 20, 1925, and was the fifth child of Jesse and Cathron (Swopes) Colon. She attended John S. Cobb High School in Cape Girardeau and at age 47 she returned to school to receive her GED. Mary married her sweetheart, William Giboney, on August 13, 1946, in Blytheville, Arkansas. Shortly after they were married, they moved to Chicago, Illinois. They were blessed five years later with the first of five children.

Mary worked in The Hallicrafters Company for many years a supervisor of electronics in soldering. She also worked for Bausch + Lomb making contact lenses, and later at her daughter's business as a florist. She had a passion for reading, baking delicious sweet potato pies and peach cobblers, and loved watching "girls" basketball.

Mary was preceded in death by her parents, husband, William E. Giboney, six brothers, Aubrey Colon, James (Lillie B.) Colon, Wilfred (Louise) Colon, Frank (Mary Etta) Colon, Jesse (Lenetta) Colon, Harry (Bernice) Colon; one sister, Ethel (Frank) Swift; grandson, Kelsey Giboney; daughter-in-law Kathy Boyd, and brother-in-law Bishop Albert Lee Giboney.

She leaves to carry on her dreams, hopes and beliefs with her youngest brother, Bill Colon of Cape Girardeau, MO; her sisters-in-law, Doris Colon of Chicago, IL and Lottie Giboney of Champaign, IL, Mamie Colon of Alabama. Mary leaves her five children, Gwendolyn Strickland of Atlanta, GA, Ronald (Susan) Giboney of Atlanta, GA, Diane (James) Bell of Aurora, CO, Carl (Rosaland) Giboney of Aurora, CO and Judy (Melvin) Humphrey of Upper Marlboro, MD. In addition, 13 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren, and a host of nieces and nephews, cousins, and friends.

Mary's legacy lives on through The Mary Giboney Memorial Scholarship, established in 2020. This scholarship provides monetary and mentorship support to minority STEM students. The first recipient was awarded $5000 in May 2021. Her passion for education and personal achievement will live on for years to come.
