Mary Lou Hamer passed on November 14, 2021.
Mary Lou Hamer was born on November 29, 1928 in Berthoud, Colorado to Percy and Ellen Howell. She grew up in rural Berthoud with her two brothers, Gordon and Edwin, enjoying farm life and riding horses. She moved to Denver in junior high school, attending Grove Middle School and then East High School where she met the love of her life, Ron Hamer. From there, they both attended the University of Colorado, Boulder where she participated in Greek life, joining the Phi Beta Kappa sorority.
In 1948, Lou and Ron married and began to raise a family, finally settling back in Denver after moving around for Ron's naval career. She is survived by three of her children, Brett, Byron, and Sam, and her three grandchildren, Dena, Raymond, and Timothy. She was preceded in death by her husband, Ron, and two of her children, Cindy and Doug.
Lou was a housewife for a good portion of her life, raising a family of five and keeping the house functioning, until she went back to college and attended Parks Business School where she studied to be a secretary. She then worked for Gulf Oil Company and Chevron Oil and Gas as an executive secretary before retiring in 1991.
She enjoyed skiing, gardening, and being a part of the community, engaging in book and cinema clubs. She also loved going to Aspen and Vail with the 'Golden Girls,' her group of close friends of many years.
A memorial service will be held at Newcomer Funeral Home Aurora at 190 Potomac Street, Aurora, 80011 from 10am-12pm on Saturday, April, 23, 2022. This will be followed by a celebration of life at the VFW Post 3631 at 18545 East Colfax Avenue, Aurora, 80011 from 12pm-3pm.
