Mary Knight Smith passed away peacefully on October 18, 2020, in Denver, Colorado after years of
fighting COPD and emphysema.
Born Mary Knight Moore in Georgiana, Alabama in 1940. She lived all of her young life in Alabama;
attending Tuskeegee High School, Judson College and Auburn University. She married "the best
lookin' man she'd ever laid eyes on," Murray T. Smith in December of 1960. They moved out west
briefly to Grants, New Mexico and on to Denver, Colorado where their two daughters were born. After
relocating to the Imperial Valley area of Southern California for a few years the family made Colorado
their permanent home. (Although judging by the Southern drawl that she held on to, you would think
she had never left the South!)
Known to her clients as "Mary Kay," she started Smith Income Tax Service in Lakewood, Colorado in
the early 70's. Meeting with clients for nearly 50 years, including this year, even at 80 years old. She
had an amazing understanding of all things income tax related and built life long bonds with her clients.
Many clients have said that because of Mary they actually looked forward to their annual tax
appointment. That compliment says it all. Mary loved her clients dearly and thought of them as
family.
Mary Knight was a loving wife, mother and grandmother. She had a heart of gold with a magnetic
personality and was always the life of a party. She cooked many wonderful meals for friends and
family and made every occasion, especially Christmas, into an unforgettable event.
Mary Knight is survived by her devoted husband of 60 years, Murray T. Smith; daughter Alison
Landers and her husband Chris of Anniston, Alabama; daughter Amy Stone and her husband Chris of
Denver; and by grandsons Trent and Wilson Landers of Birmingham, Alabama and Thomas Stone of
Denver.
She was so very loved, and will be deeply missed by her family, extended family and hundreds of
beloved clients and friends. We will all remember her standing knee deep in the ocean with a fishing
pole in her hand or sitting behind her desk with an endless stream of adding machine tape.
A private service and burial is being held due to Covid 19 and a celebration of her life will be
announced in the future.
In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting donations be made to Denver Rescue Mission.
