Matthew H. Turner

Matthew Henry Turner Jr was born on August 10, 1933 in Trenton, New Jersey to the parents of Matthew Henry Turner Sr and Elizabeth Marie Burton. Matthew had a younger brother named Franchot Turner. Matthew graduated from Morris High School in the Bronx, New York. Matthew enlisted in the United States Air Force and served for 8 years. Matthew enlisted in the Army Reserves and retired as Sergeant First Class in the Army on August 10, 1993.

Matthew was married to Maria Gonzalez and from this union was Lavynia Marie Turner.
On June 1972, Matthew was employed by the NYC Health & Hospital Corporation and he worked at Jacobi Hospital as a Hospital Police Officer. During his tenure, he received numerous awards for excellence and promotions. He was an active employee representative on the Hospital's Community Board. He also served as the Board's Treasurer as well as the Chairman fo the Patient Care and Ambulatory Care committees. He retired from this position in 1992.

Matthew loved going fishing in Montauk, New York.
Matthew enjoyed playing handball, paddleball and basketball. He was an avid bowler. In his retirement years, he was in 6 different bowling leagues in Colorado. He competed in several tournaments in Las Vegas. He was also a member of the Denver Strikers & Strikettes Bowling Club.
Matthew loved music especially Jazz.
Matthew loved playing bid whist and pinochle.
Matthew was always making friends everywhere he went. He treasured those friendships.
Matthew was kind and loved by many.

Matthew was a Deacon at Mount Moriah Baptist Church in Charleston, South Carolina.
Matthew volunteered at the Men Riv Elementary School in Berkeley County in Charleston, South Carolina. He was bestowed with a 1999-2000 Volunteer Service Award.

Matthew is survived by his daughter Lavynia Washington, son-in-law Clarence Washington, granddaughters Chareen Washington, LaTeisha Washington and Kortni Washington. He is also survived by three great grandsons John Frelix, Omari Pryor and Oziel Pryor. He is preceded in death by his parents Matthew and Elizabeth Turner and his brother Franchot Turner.
