Maurice Pattengill

August 31, 1938 — February 20, 2018

MAURICE GLENN PATTENGILL AUGUST 31, 1938 - FEBRUARY 20, 2018 It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Maurice Pattengill, who entered into eternal life in The Kingdom on February 20, 2018, at the age of 80. Maurice passed away in loving care at the Collier hospice facility in Wheatridge, Colorado, with his wife Keran by his side.

Maurice was a gifted teacher, researcher, writer, artist, musician; loving husband and father; treasured colleague and friend. Maurice was born and raised in McPherson, Kansas. He married the love of his life, Keran Decker, on July 16, 1961, at the First Baptist Church of McPherson, making their home in Manhattan and then Topeka, and then moving to Golden, Colorado. Maurice graduated with a Bachelor of Science from Kansas State University, and went on to complete a Master of Science in Geological Science, also from Kansas State University, in 1964. He worked for the Kansas State Highway Commission, the Kansas Bureau of Investigation, Washburn University, and in 1966 began working as a Project Engineer, moving to Senior Project Engineer, and subsequently to Project Manager at the Colorado School of Mines Research Institute in Golden, Colorado. He retired from Western Aggregates (TXI) in Boulder, Colorado, where he served as Quality Control Manager.

In Maurice's working years, he owned several successful businesses such as Foothills Industrial Mineral Consultation, InterClay Laboratories, and a Big A auto parts store in Lakewood, Colorado. In his retirement, Maurice taught geological science courses as an Adjunct Professor at Metropolitan State University of Denver.

He enjoyed riding the RTD bus to and from Denver to teach, and always had delightful stories to tell of those he met on his commutes. During his research years, Maurice wrote many notable research papers and books, and developed several U.S. patents. Maurice and Keran, and their daughter Rhonda (born in 1964), moved to Golden after the June 8th (1966) Topeka tornado. It was in Golden that Maurice settled into family and community life he so treasured. Maurice enjoyed years as the President of the Golden Kiwanis Club, and was responsible for many civic projects which enriched and supported the Golden community, with evidence of his civic dedication and civic projects remaining to this day.

In his retirement, Maurice embraced a life in the creative arts, writing poetry, short stories, painting, sketching and making music with his volunteer music duo, with his wife Keran, "Just Passing Thru". He and Keran touched many hearts and lives with their "music ministry" throughout the Colorado front range and southern New Mexico, playing in nursing homes, assisted living facilities, and at facilities for the developmentally disabled, where singing along and dancing with joy was common. They also blessed family and friends with their musical talents. Maurice and Keran touched many lives with their uplifting music, many who would not otherwise have had the opportunity to be surrounded by such joy and inspiration.

Maurice and Keran spent many treasured years together visiting New Mexico in the winters, visiting with friends, and enjoying creative pursuits in the beautiful landscape of southern New Mexico; a landscape which touched their hearts so deeply over the years. They developed many enduring friendships during those years, with warmer months spent at their home in Golden, where they also enjoyed many friendships and were devoted and treasured members of the Golden community. Both were known especially for their generous hospitality.

Maurice was a kind and gifted soul, and is missed dearly by friends and family.

Maurice, at the time of his passing, left behind wife Keran, daughter Rhonda, and son-in-law Scott, as well as beloved relatives in Kansas, Kentucky and Texas. His wife Keran entered into eternal life on November 8, 2023. Rhonda and her husband Scott reside in Golden. Both Maurice and Keran are dearly missed, but are no doubt creating their beautiful music together in eternity. We look forward to the day of being reunited with these beautiful souls in The Kingdom.
