MERNA D. GUNNELLS was born on November 8, 1930 in Quinter, Kansas, and passed away May 1, 2022 in Greeley, Colorado, at Life Care Center of Greeley. She passed peacefully, surrounded by her family, walking into the arms of Jesus.
Merna was the oldest child born to J. Manning and Leila Rhoades.
She lived in Wakeeney, Kansas, until she moved to Colorado with her family when she was 16. Except for the 2 years she served in the Women's Army Corp (WAC), she remained in Colorado until her death.
Before moving to Greeley in her later years Merna resided in Denver and was active in her church, singing in the choir, serving meals at the Servicemen's Center, and serving as head of the church nursery. These are a few of the many ways she helped.
She enjoyed attending Denver Bronco games with her daughter over the years and enjoyed watching baseball. Her favorite team was the Chicago Cubs and would watch them when she could.
She worked for the Colorado State Department of Public Health, until her retirement in 1980. She then cared for family members.
Upon moving to Greeley in 1997, she became active at Birchwood Manor, serving as President of the Tenants Association. She then moved to Life Center of Greeley, where she lived until her death.
Merna is survived by her son, Gregory Gunnells (Diana), LaSalle, Colorado and daughter, Melanie Bazemore, Scottsbluff, Nebraska. She is also survived by her four grandchildren, Christopher (Tiffany) Gunnells, Greeley, Colorado, Allison Gunnells, Denver, Colorado, Matthew Bazemore, Omaha, Nebraska, Preston Bazemore, Scottsbluff, Nebraska, and great-grandchildren, Conifer Gunnells and Raleigh Gunnells, Greeley as well as many nieces, nephews, and friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents, sisters, Gwen Denning, Lois Jean Norton, and brothers, James M. Rhoades IV, Michael Rhoades, and her son-in-law Thomas Bazemore.
She was a devoted Christian mother and grandmother, and we will miss her smile, laughter, sense of humor, and her love for the Lord. Please remember Merna with joy and love in your heart.
