Michelle René Smith, 48, passed away peacefully at her home September 22 after a nine year battle with breast cancer.
Known as Missy to her family, she was born in Boise, Idaho to Neil and Becky (Morrison). She also lived in Albuquerque NM and Colorado Springs CO.
Michelle graduated from Doherty High School in Colorado Springs and earned her Bachelor of Science Degree from Colorado State University in Medical Technology and Microbiology. She worked for over 20 years as a Medical Technologist at the University of Colorado Hospital, mostly in the Cancer Center.
She is survived by her husband Matt and son Dustin Lofthouse.
Both of her parents have died of cancer. Her mother Becky fell to breast cancer in 1999 and her father died this year after a fight with pancreatic cancer.
Missy is also survived by her loving step-mother, Neil's wife, Dian Horton. Dian has provided love and support to all of us and was with Missy the night she passed.
Missy is also survived by a wonderful step-father, Becky's husband, Jack Reichardt. Jack has since remarried and with his wife Jodie, they made numerous trips from Colorado Springs offering meals, rides, and love.
Michelle is also survived by her brother Scott Horton.
Michelle will be remembered as a loving and outgoing woman who always tried to help people through cancer . She is a beloved Bronco fan and enjoyed many Rockies games with her Dad and Dian.
A special thanks to Missy's grandmother Lucile Morrison and Matt's sister Madeline Killian for the help they provided during the last couple of months at home. Also a very sincere thanks to Bonnie Hartman, Michelle's best friend, who was with us the night she died.
She is also preceded in death by her loyal Labrador Jordan and is survived by the new Lab Riley, and good old Princess the cat.
