Mitchell Sidney Godsman was born March 25th, 1923 in Burlington, Colorado. He attended school in Denver where he graduated from East High School. He started college but really wanted to serve his country during World War II, so he enlisted in the Army Air Corps. While training in Texas he met Katherine Gulos. They were married in Boston shortly before he went overseas. He served as a B24 Bombardier in the 15th Air Force stationed in Italy.
After the war ended he attended the University of Denver where he received his BS degree in Civil Engineering. He was called back to active duty for the Korean Conflict. He moved the family and served at Cannon Air Force Base, Clovis, New Mexico. After that he remained in the National Guard for 20 years, retiring as a Major. This service included an Air Group, Infantry Division and a Tank Company. Mitch helped form the Tank Company in St. Joseph, Michigan.
His career took him to Michigan for nineteen years and Virginia for eleven. During those years he was very active in his church where he taught Sunday school, served on the Vestry and was a licensed lay reader. He was also an active Member of Kiwanis International.
He and Katherine moved to Grand Junction in 1984 where they lived for 25 years.
In retirement he was very active with St. Matthew's Episcopal Church and the Grand Junction Masonic Lodge #55 where he received the hard earned and seldom won 33rd degree. His fellow Masons referred to him as a Mason's Mason.
His last year was spent in Lakewood, Colorado where he and Katherine were able to be closer to their children.
Mitchell is survived by his wife of 65 years, Katherine, three daughters: Charlotte (James Doolittle) Godsman, Lakewood, Connie (Roger) Carr, Lead, SD, Elizabeth (Jerry ) Lunday, Mesquite, TX, three sons: Paul (Deborah), Evergreen, William, Denver and Thomas, Fairfax, VA: eleven grandchildren and thirteen great grandchildren and his sister Charlotte Lyons, La Jolla, CA.
He was preceded in death by a brother Paul J., sister June A. and a grandson, Patrick Doolittle.
The funeral service will be held Friday, July 30 at 10am, St. Mary's Anglican Church located at 2290 South Clayton in Denver.
