Morris "Mory" Leon Lewis – 79
"Mory," to new friends, "Ham," to old friends and family, died on October 5, 2009, from complications of pneumonia, surrounded by his beloved wife and children. He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Bobbie, daughters Kelly Lewis and Joni Smith (Mike), son Mark Lewis (Alison), four grandchildren, Cory, Celia, Lexi, and Joaquin, and sisters Ineta Dever, Katherine McCarty, and Bonnie Lewis, and many nieces and nephews.
Mory was born on July 29, 1930, in his family's farm house near Snyder, Texas, where he was raised. Mory and Bobbie were married in 1954, and after college, moved to Chicago, Illinois, for a short time, where Mory worked on his Ph.D. They moved overseas where he was a cartographer (human geographer and map maker) with the Agency for International Development in both Ethiopia and Iran. Throughout his career and retirement, Mory worked tirelessly for those in need. After Mory and Bobbie returned to the United States in 1963, Mory worked as a management executive for several federal agencies, and retired in 1983. After retirement, he jumped into politics in Jefferson County, running for several offices before moving on to serve on the executive board of the Jeffco Self-Sufficiency Council. For more than 20 years, he also served as a Jefferson County Housing Authority Commissioner and was the current Chairman. After working his way up from Chapter President, Mory was elected Region VII National Field Vice-President for the National Active and Retired Federal Employees (NARFE) in 1994, faithfully serving the members of the five-state Region for 10 years, and was inducted into NARFE's Colorado Hall of Fame. Mory loved to travel the world (Africa, Soviet Union, China, Europe, and India), engaging prime ministers and common folk alike with his intelligence and wit. He also enjoyed golfing, playing bridge and dominos with friends, and spent many Sundays watching Meet the Press, CNN, and cheering on the Broncos and Rockies. Mory was a devoted husband, father, and "Papa," and his favorite past time was spending time with his wife, kids, grandkids, and the many friends he made throughout his exciting and fulfilling lifetime. He will be dearly missed by all who knew and loved him.
A memorial service and reception will be held at 4:00 pm on Sunday, October 11, 2009, at Lakewood United Methodist Church, 1390 Brentwood Street, Lakewood, Colorado. All are welcome.
