Nelson Thomas Gabel, 93, went home to be with his Lord and Savior on Friday, April 16, 2021 at home in Gray, Georgia.
Nelson was born in Newport, Pennsylvania on October 10, 1927 to the late Mary Elizabeth McNaughton (Gabel-Gilbert) and Josiah Leslie Gabel. Nelson earned his GED in the US Army where he served on active duty during the Korean War from November 1950 to October 1952 earning the rank of Sargent. Nelson met the love of his life Patricia Ann McCoy at R.T. Skewes Trucking in Gary in 1950. They married on August 29, 1953 and were blessed with four children, Nelson Leslie, Robin Lynn, David Thomas, and Sandra Lea.
A master diesel mechanic, Nelson worked at Summerfield GMC in Gary, IN before starting his own business, Gabel's Diesel Service. In 1979 the family moved to Colorado where they built their dream home in Bailey, CO and started a construction business, Gabel Enterprises. Nelson & Pat ran the business together until his retirement in 2014. Nelson also worked for the Jefferson County Public School System from 1980 until he retired in 1998. He was Employee of the Year in 1989 and CSEA President 1986 to 1988.
He was a member of Beth Eden Baptist Church in Wheat Ridge, CO.
Nelson was preceded in death by his loving wife Patricia Ann and daughter Robin Lynn Dustman of Caputa, SD.
Survivors are his children Nelson Leslie and Debbie Gabel of Valparaiso, IN, David & April Gabel of Mead, CO and Sandra & David Davis of Gray, GA, several nieces and nephews, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Viewing and visitation will begin on Monday, May 10th at 9:00 a.m. at Newcomer Funeral Home's West Metro Chapel, Lakewood CO with a memorial service at 10 am. Burial will immediately follow in Ft. Logan Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to the Wilds Christian Camp or the Beth Eden Baptist Church building fund.
