Nobue "Nobby" Katsushige Trafton, 94, of Aurora, Colorado, passed away peacefully on Friday, November 27, 2020. Predeceased by her husband, Gordon T. Trafton, she is survived by her children Gordon (Susan) Trafton II, Raeann (Larry) Wielgot, and Mark (Debbie) Trafton; grandchildren Math (Renee) Trafton, Andrea (Matt) Huston, and Tommy Trafton; great-grandchildren, Zoe Trafton, Adeline Huston, and Audrey Huston; and several nieces, nephews, and other relatives.
Nobby, as she is affectionately known by most, was born on March 21, 1926, in Papaikou, Hawaii, to Yoshiro and Naka Katsushige. The daughter of a sugar cane farmer, Nobby was one of seven sisters who learned household skills to help support her family. By age 14, she had lost both parents and was subsequently raised by her sister Misao. During the summers of her high school years, she worked at a pineapple cannery to contribute to the family finances. After she graduated from high school, she moved to Honolulu to continue her education. Though she was originally interested in the medical field and wanted to become a nurse, the family couldn't afford the cost of her education, so she compromised and agreed to attend secretarial school. After Nobby graduated from secretarial school, she landed a job in administration with the Army. While in Honolulu, she met Gordon Trafton, who was stationed at Schofield Barracks, and they married on May 2, 1953. They were transferred to several bases across the country before finally settling in Aurora, Colorado in 1961, where they would raise their three children. While her children were in high school, she resumed her career working at the exchange service at Fitzsimons Army Medical Center for 15 years before retiring in 1986.
Nobby was a wonderful woman who was independent and courageous but was also deeply devoted to her husband, three children, and later her three grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. She demonstrated her profound love for her family through personal sacrifice and hard work, two traits she instilled in her children. She had high expectations for the people in her life, but she would never hesitate to help those in need, and she was always so proud of others' accomplishments, especially those of her children and grandchildren. An excellent homemaker on every front, she ran the household and taught her children many of the skills she had learned as a child, including cooking, gardening, and sewing. When it came to cooking, nobody could resist her teriyaki steak, brownies, fresh apple pie, or her famous strawberry jam. She had a great sense of humor and loved to laugh and was also a very friendly person; she loved making new friends as much as she loved nurturing the friendships she already had. Throughout her life, she profoundly affected those around her and will be missed dearly.
Because of her love of gardening and flowers, donations can be made in her name to the Denver Botanical Garden. A celebration of life is planned in 2021.
