Val was raised on a rural farm and learned the values of hard work and perseverance. After his honorable discharge, he worked as a civilian at Fitzsimmons Army Medical Center as the Motorpool Shop Foreman for 37 years. His great passion in life was pheasant and quail hunting, participating in dog trials, and training dogs related to these sports. He loved to dance and asked every young lady he met if she liked to dance. He is survived by his loving wife, Mae Joan "Jody" Gast; daughter, Cynthia Powell; son, Kim Gast; stepchildren, David Wiley, Ronald (Deanne Hancock) Wiley, and Pamela (Scott) Jussel; grandchildren, Justin, Ryan, and Danielle Wiley, Kyle (Allison) Jussel, and Jamie (Jesse) Fasano; and one great grandchild, Sydney Mae Jussel.
