Ray Bishop was born in Catlin, Illinois to Alvin and Goldie Bishop. Ray joined the Illinois National Guard in 1939, his guard unit was integrated into the regular US Army at the beginning of WWII, and he served 4 1/2 years in the regular infantry, advancing to the position of 1st sergeant of Company M of the 263rd Regiment of the 89th Panther Division at Camp Carson, Colorado. Ray was a life member of the Disabled American Veterans Association.
Ray married Elizabeth (Betty) Louise Norris on November 21, 1942, and he and Betty raised three sons, Raymond Daniel Jr. (Dan), Robert Glen (Bob), and Harold Alvin (Hal). Bob, deceased, was a Vietnam era veteran. Dan and his wife Ann reside in Port Townsend, WA, and Hal and his wife, Kathy, live in Lakewood, CO. Betty passed away on October 10, 1999.
After the war, Ray attended Pueblo Junior College and graduated from Denver Art Institute in 1948, as an advertising artist and publications specialist. In Denver, Ray worked eight years for Martin Marietta's Titan missile program in the 50's. Later, he moved his family to California where he worked for Atlantic Research as Manager of Publications in the development of the Athena missile. In 1966, Ray (and family) moved back to Colorado, where he worked as Publications Manager for Baptist Publications (later Accent Publications) for 18 years.
In 1985, Ray and Betty founded Bishop Graphics in Lakewood, Colorado, providing art, publication design, typesetting, and print production management for Denver area businesses.
For decades Ray and Betty taught Sunday school classes for 2 and 3-year-old children, with Betty writing age appropriate lessons and Ray illustrating them. Ray is preceded in death by his wife, Betty, son Bob, and his three sisters, Anna, Neoma, and Rosie. He is survived by two sons, Dan and Harold, three granddaughters, two great-grandsons and one great-granddaughter, and his brother, Lewis Bishop, of Homer, Illinois.
Ray asks you to rejoice with him at this time in this happy move. He wrote, "I am looking forward to this new adventure into an exciting, uncharted world, where I anticipate becoming reacquainted with my relatives, friends, and neighbors and loved ones who have gone ahead, and waiting for many more who will join me in the future." "Believe, Accept, and Repent have been my favorite words that reflect my LOVE for Christ."
