Roger Samuel Young 85, of Arvada, CO, died Friday December 13, 2019. He was born January 25, 1934, in South Portland, Maine. Roger graduated from North Quincy High School in 1951 and received a BA (Magna Cum Laude) in History from Eastern Nazarene College, Quincy, MA in 1955. Roger received multiple graduate degrees beginning with the Nazarene Theological Seminary in 1958 in Theology, Oregon State University in 1964 (Guidance and Counseling), and while at University of Colorado, received a Master's degree in Educational Psychology in 1974 and Doctoral studies in Social Foundations of Education from 1974-1978.
Roger was an ordained minister and pastored churches (Nazarene) in Adrian, MO; Hemlock, OR; Junction City, OR; Denair, CA and Westminster, CO. Roger then switched careers and began teaching history at Alameda and O'Connell Jr High Schools in Lakewood, CO from 1973-1996. In parallel with teaching, he was the associate pastor at Lakewood Church of the Nazarene from 1974-2018, and in 2019 was recognized as Pastor Emeritus. Roger also volunteered at Lutheran hospital in several capacities: hospice bereavement, staff grief support group facilitator and chaplain from 1991-2000.
Roger is survived by two sons: Steve of Wheat Ridge, CO and Rick of Henderson, NV, and two grandsons, Ryan and Tyler. Also, by 3 siblings: Donald, Gordon and Lois. He was preceded in death by his wife Jane Carol Young in 2006, his parents Dr. Samuel Young in 1990, Arlene Leavitt Young in 2006 and biological mother Ethelyn Peavey Young in 1935.
A celebration service will be held at Lakewood Church of the Nazarene on Thursday, Dec 19th at 11:00 am.
