Rex Martinez, a.k.a Tony Gurlay, of Denver, CO passed away at the age of 85, peacefully in his home surrounded by his loved ones on April 5, 2023. Born to Agripiana and Tim Martinez in Grand Junction, CO on December 10, 1937, Rex was the second youngest of 11 children. He grew up on his family farm where he helped harvest fruits and vegetables and cared for livestock. His highest education was a single day in the 9th grade.
Rex was inducted into the U.S. Army as a private in 1958 at the age of 21 and was honorably discharged in 1962 as a private. He eventually planted roots in Denver, CO near family and friends. As a man of many trades, Rex took courses in upholstery, welding, machining, and carpentry before landing his long-term position with the U.S. Mint. After 30+ years, he retired from the U.S. Mint in 1996 as a Stationary Engineer.
Outside of work, Rex spent his free time restoring and managing rental properties around the Denver Metro area and he loved going to Winchell's Donut shop or McDonald's to enjoy a cup of coffee with the boys. Rex was an active member of the Church of All Saints, where he regularly prepared the sanctuary for morning Mass and was a devout Catholic. Rex was well known for his beaming smile, his witty jokes and stubborn as a mule personality. He had a loving heart and was a friend to all he crossed paths with.
Rex is survived by his daughter, Charmaine Shaw and two grandchildren, Kayla and Paige Franklin. Rex was the father and grandfather that he didn't need to be, but he was the best at both. Throughout his life, he was always present at all school and family functions. He is also survived by his sister Viola Hook and numerous beloved nieces, nephews, and friends. Rex touched the lives of so many and will be dearly missed by all who were blessed to know him.
The family wishes to express their deepest gratitude to everyone for your prayers and continued support during this challenging time.
