Richard Johnson, 86, died on Saturday, March 18, 2023, at his home in Conifer, Colorado. He was born August 11, 1936, in Denver, Colorado, the son of Oscar Eldridge and Emma Rose (Anderson) Johnson.
After graduating in 1954 from North High School in Denver, Colorado he joined the United States Navy Reserves, attending training at the US Naval Station in Oakland, CA. He was stationed on the Aircraft Carrier USS Kearsarge CVA-33, returning to Colorado after his discharge in 1957.
Dick worked in many areas of the government, retiring from a long career with the Denver Federal Center where he was an Electronics Technician. For many years he built electronic tracking devices that were used to follow the movements of endangered animals, spending much of his time in Alaska tracking eagles, ducks, and polar bears.
Dick was an avid sportsman and loved the water. He spent many summers with family and friends at his favorite spot, Lake Powell in Arizona. He loved the mountains, spending many weekends and summers 4-wheeling through several mountain trails and passes. One of his favorite pastimes was building and flying remote control planes, and he was an active member of the Jefco Aeromod'lers Club in Denver, Colorado.
He married Elizabeth (Sunny) Brester in April of 1956. They had two daughters, Kathy and Sandy. Dick later married Pamela Pettee, raising one son, Robert. They were married 42 years before her death in September of 2020.
Dick is survived by his daughter, Kathy Diehl (Donnie) of Garden City, KS and son, Rob Johnson (Angie) of Conifer, CO; 5 grandchildren (Chris and Caitlin Hibler, Alex Weston and Terra Toner, Sam Weston and Vlada Aleksandra, Audrey and Aaron Maxwell, Kevin Diehl), 6 Great-Grandchildren (Aiden and Addison Hibler, Shae, Gavin and Clayton Maxwell, Hazel Diehl), and many nieces and nephews.
He is preceded in death by his parents, wife Pam, brother Bobby, sister Peggy and his beloved daughter Sandy.
Dick was smart, hard-working, funny, and generous. He was greatly loved and will be deeply missed by his family and friends.
A memorial service will take place at Crown Hill in Wheatridge, Colorado and will be announced at a later date.
