Visitation is on Thursday, October 7, 2021, at Newcomer Funeral Home (190 Potomac Street, Aurora, CO) from 6-8 PM.

At the time of their deaths, Richard was eighty-eight and Mary Jo was eighty-seven years of age.
Theirs is a love story.

Richard was born in Corpus Christi, TX, on April 12, 1933, to Robert and Bessie (Hullum) Lloyd. He was the youngest of six children. Mary Jo was born in Ben Wheeler, TX, on July 19, 1934, to Lewis and Alice (Douglas) Gamble, the fourth of six children. Each family had three boys and three girls. Mary Jo has one surviving sister, Alice Joye (Gamble) Alexa who resides in California. The couple were members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints.

Mary Jo's sister Alice Joye introduced Richard and Mary Jo at a dance band rehearsal. Richard was the band's talented saxophonist. At the time, Mary Jo was a gorgeous majorette in the WB Ray High School Marching Band in Corpus Christi. The two were married on February 7, 1953, prior to Richard entering the US Air Force on February 14 of that year.

They began their life together living on or near military bases where Richard worked as a jet airplane mechanic and Mary Jo settled into her role as a homemaker and loving wife. Many of their fondest stories were of the friends they made, the adventures they had, the music they loved, and the everlasting bond they built with each other.

While their children were growing up, the family lived in Corpus Christi and in Colorado. Richard was a meat cutter by trade. Mary Jo loved the beach. She took delight in driving on the beach with her children and popping Portuguese Man o' War. Richard and his son James enjoyed fishing for snapper and trout in the intracoastal waterway. The family all had a love of baseball and spent many happy hours enjoying Houston Astros and Texas Rangers games. After moving to Colorado the family also enjoyed camping trips in the mountains. The best breakfast potatoes EVER originated on those camping trips.

One last move to Texas was in 1978 when the couple purchased a home and four acres in the rural community of Bettie in East Texas. The property included the perfect barn, a giant Magnolia tree and a dogwood that delighted everyone with its spring blooms. The place was "home" until the couple moved into assisted living in 2018. In August 2020 they made a final move back to Denver where they lived in closer proximity to several family members.

Their love story continued throughout their life together, right up to their last loving conversation two days before Richard passed. Mary Jo followed two days later.

Richard and Mary Jo are survived by their four children: James Michael Lloyd (Melinda), Sharon Kay Waldschmidt, Linda Lea Fox, and Elizabeth Ann Herd (Lee). They are also survived by numerous grandchildren and great grandchildren. One grandson, Ryan Richard, preceded Richard and Mary Jo in death.
