Robert Stanley Bell

April 30, 1951 — January 9, 2020

Robert Stanley Bell 4/30/51 -1/9/20

Robert (Bob) Bell, a much respected, beloved and devoted rocket scientist, father, husband, grandfather, and uncle, passed away quietly in his home, having just been placed under palliative care.

He battled pancreatic cancer for well over a year. Monday, the week of his passing, he had gone to the gym, as he had been going for decades, to try and maintain whatever strength and mobility he could. Bob was an avid golfer, loved camping, singing with the choir, and all things space.

Bob was born in Kansas City, Missouri to Harold and Dorothy Bell of West Virginia. Having graduated Ruskin High in 1969, he went to Columbia University, but left to join the Air Force with three of his friends who had much shorter draft numbers. He married Jane Pujol, and had a son, David, who passed away in 2018, a devastating loss.

Bob served 6 years in the United States Air Force, followed by 2 years in the reserves. Divorced, he met and married his soul mate Eva. Bob and Eva were together 44 years.

Bob got his mechanical engineering degree from University of Colorado, and had a master's degree equivalency in nuclear engineering. He worked on many rocket development programs for Lockheed, Boeing, Ball and most recently 8 tumultuous, dedicated years on the Dream Chaser for Sierra Nevada Corp. His work was valued, admired, respected and a few years ago his name was instated in the International Space Hall of Fame, along with his team members for their work on the DCX rocket. The DCX technology is the basis of the current Space X program.

Bob is survived by his wife Eva, his stepson James, and his wife, Melissa, and their daughter Genevieve and their grown son, Tristan. Bob and Eva are also guardians of a granddaughter Zoe Urbanic. Bob was also loved by his nieces Tina, Missy, and Niki in Kansas City, and nephew Kris and their families.

He will be laid to rest in Kansas City 3rd week of March next to his mother, father, two younger brothers and his son.

May this bring closure and honor to the entire beloved Bell family.
