Obituary
Robert Samuel James, affectionately known as "Bobby," passed away peacefully at his home in Aurora, CO, on March 13, 2025, at the age of 85. Born on January 31, 1940, in Massillon, Ohio, he was the beloved son of the late Samuel (Sims) and Annie Ruth James.
Bobby was a proud graduate of Washington High School, Class of 1958. His passion for learning led him to earn an Associate's Degree in Science from Springfield Technical Community College in 1976. He later pursued studies in Law Enforcement and Social Psychology at Columbia College from 1985 to 1987.
A man of many talents, Bobby had a knack for fixing and repairing almost anything. As a young boy, he worked tirelessly, delivering newspapers and setting up bowling pins by hand—a dangerous job at the time. He later worked at a women’s apparel store before embarking on a distinguished career of service.
Bobby dedicated 35 years of his life to the United States Air Force, serving in active duty and the reserve, from July 1958 to 1993 and retiring as a Master Sergeant. His military career began with training at Lackland Air Force Base, followed by specialization in pneumatics and hydraulics at Sheppard Air Force Base. In 1959, he was stationed in France for two years, where he traveled to Paris, Luxembourg, and Strasbourg, embracing the rich history and culture of Europe. In addition to his military service, Bobby served as a police officer with the Springfield Police Department and later as a Deputy Sheriff for the Arapahoe County Sheriff’s Department, retiring as a Sergeant. His dedication to law enforcement reflected his unwavering commitment to protecting and serving his community.
Bobby had an adventurous spirit and a deep love for travel. He cherished annual trips to Ohio to visit family and enjoyed exploring new destinations. His strong sense of service extended beyond his career, as he became a proud member of Colorado Lodge No. 4 Prince Hall Masons in 1987 and joined The Enlisted Association (TREA) in 1993. Known for his generosity and selflessness, he was always willing to lend a helping hand to family, friends, and those in need.
He is survived by his loving wife of 26 years, Priscilla James (Aurora, CO); his sister, Carol Clark (Cornelius) (Massillon, OH); his brother, Lisbon James (Massillon, OH); his sons, Derek James (Rancho Cucamonga, CA), Step Son, Dimples Thomas-Lyons (Pueblo, CO); his daughter, Michelle Clopton (North Blair, SC); his in-laws Percy Payton (Denver, CO), Paul Johnson (Sharlene Johnson) (Cheyenne, WY), Linda Wiggins (Canton, OH), Earnestine Johnson (Denver, CO), Ella Wallace (Leapolian) (Mobile, AL); his grandchildren, Stacy James-Shadd (Eric) (Rancho Cucamonga, CA), Derek James Jr. (Kiwa) (Japan), Meladie Lowe (Justin) (Denver, CO), Derrick Clopton II (Katy) (Parker, CO); as well as his eight great-grandchildren and his goddaughter, Dominique Harlan (Aurora, CO); a host of nieces and nephews to include Christine Pullin (Massillon, OH). He was preceded in death by his parents, Samuel (1950) and Annie (2010); his son, Floyd James (2007); and his younger brother, Wayne Wiggins (2018).
Bobby’s life was defined by service, dedication, and love—to his family, his country, and his community. His legacy of kindness, strength, and generosity will forever remain in the hearts of those who knew and loved him.
