Robert Lee Dotson, Jr.

March 3, 1955 — February 6, 2021

Robert Lee Dotson, Jr. was born March 3, 1955 in Saginaw, Michigan to Janie Gladys (Giles) and Robert Lee Dotson, Sr. He was the oldest child. Soon, 5 siblings came: Roselle, Annie, Derek, Kevin and Christian Dior and everybody looked up to him. He was an awesome and caring big brother.

He went to several schools including Swanson Elementary, Morey Middle School and Manual High School.

It was at Manual High School that Robert met the love of his life, Cheryl. They met in ROTC and he was her platoon leader. His sister, Roselle, introduced us because Cheryl told her that she liked him. Cheryl knew from that point that she was going to marry Robert and spend her life with him.

In April 1973, Robert joined the U.S. Navy and was a gunner man that shot missiles to protect our country. He served in Japan, the Philippines, San Diego and Hawaii. While in the Navy, he got his degree. He was honorably discharged on April 8, 1975 at the rank of SR.

All the while he was in the Navy, Robert and Cheryl kept in close contact. When Robert returned home, he picked up where he left off with Cheryl. They married on March 6, 1976. Robert and Cheryl welcomed the additions of Alonzo in 1977 and in 1980 Bre-Moanea and the family grew close.

Robert worked for years as a physical therapist at Denver General Hospital (now Denver Health). He then worked for various moving companies and family businesses. In 1980, his family purchased a club which was called, "A Place to Play." He became the Lead DJ and entertained the night life in Denver. He also got to know personal celebrities like Earth, Wind and Fire, Rosie and Pam Grier and Sinbad. Robert enjoyed singing, dancing and spending time with his family. He played the saxophone, trumpet and clarinet.

The highlight of his life was loving on kids, even if they weren't his. He took a short trip to San Diego and discovered it was about family. He raised numerous children, female and family, advised them, counseled them, loved on them and especially fed them. Many came from near or far to eat his fried catfish, his spam and eggs or sausage, egg, and cheese sandwiches. He was a cook like no other. He was also known to many as "Snoop Dog." He was very particular about his hair, always wanting it braided and only by Cheryl.

As he grew older, Robert was an EMS for Veterans Administration Hospital. He always looked forward to returning home at the end of his shifts. He made family his priority and that was all he needed to make his life complete. On Saturdays, he would have a date night with Cheryl, Alonzo and Bre-Moanea. They would go listen to Michael Jackson or Billy Ocean and the grandchildren and great-grandchildren would dance. He left this earth knowing he was priority to his family as well.

Robert is survived by his wife Cheryl; children Alonzo and Bre-Moanea; grandchildren, Elijah, Quiana, Alexus, Alaya, D'Vontre, Synsere, Imani, Aiyana; great-grandchild Majesty; 4 siblings, Annie, Derek, Kevin and Christian Dior; his mother, Janie; many nieces, nephews, cousins, godchildren, extended family and a host of friends.

He was preceded in death by his father, Robert Lee Dotson, Sr. and his sister, Roselle.
