Dr. Robert F. Wintersmith was born and raised in St. Louis, Missouri. He was a noted educator, academician, philosopher, criminal justice expert and champion for human rights. Friends knew him as "Bob". A proponent of education, Bob completed advanced degrees in policy analysis, program planning and organizational management. He received a Bachelor of Arts from Lincoln University (Jefferson City, MO), a Master of Social Work from Washington University (St. Louis, MO), a Master of Arts in Urban Studies from Occidental College (Los Angeles, CA) and a Doctorate of Philosophy from Brandeis University (Waltham, MA). Over the years, Bob held associate and adjunct professorships at the following universities: Brandeis, Northeastern, Tufts, Washington and Webster Universities. He also taught at Boston College, Forest Park Community College and Lindenwood College.
Bob was a practicing social worker, counselor, therapist, human rights advocate and community organizer. A nationally recognized authority on police-community relations, crisis intervention and team policing, Bob was on the Board of Police Commissioners in St. Louis, MO. He also lectured at police academies and law enforcement institutes throughout the U.S. In 1974 he authored the book, "Police and the Black Community" (currently slated for reprint). Moving to Colorado in 1986, Robert became Research and Education Director for the Colorado Civil Rights Division, serving for 14 years. Subsequently, he founded Wintersmith & Associates, a firm specializing in mediation, arbitration, EEO investigations and dispute resolution. Clients included the U.S. EEOC and other federal agencies, organizations and institutions.
Bob was preceded in death by his parents, James and Shirley Wintersmith, his brother, James P. Wintersmith, and his son Keith Wintersmith. To celebrate his life, Bob leaves his wife of 65 years, Rita; a son and daughter-in-law, Mark and Norma Wintersmith; a daughter, Anne Wintersmith; five grandchildren, Johnathan E. Abundez-Wintersmith, Taylor Klein, Kai Wintersmith, Tyden Wintersmith and Christopher Sinclair; and three great-grandchildren.
His friends and associates were innumerable. Bob was the consummate husband, father, mentor and friend, and he will be greatly missed.
