Ron Michael Drey – Born September 1949 in Ames, IA, spent his primary years in Urbandale, IA. He was the oldest of 4 siblings, graduated from Dowling High School 1967 and enlisted in the Navy in 1969. After his service in the Navy he moved to Boulder, CO and worked as a contractor building geodesic domes and remodeling spaces. He enjoyed the outdoors and eventually moved to Eagle, CO. Ron liked skiing so staying in the mountains was very important. He became a building inspector for the Town of Breckenridge and Summit County, CO and that led him into his career of a building plans examiner and later became certified as a building official. He worked for several jurisdictions and was a member of the Colorado Chapter of ICBO that later became the Colorado Chapter of ICC and enjoyed committee work and engaging with his peers. He and 2 coworkers started and were the principles of C-West Code Consultants in 1996. After he retired in 2011 from C-West, he became bored and founded FRJ & PSV, LLC in 2012 and did fire stopping special inspections.
Ron loved sailing. He bought a J-22 in 1988 that he christened "GO rilla" that he kept at Lake Dillion. That's when he and Mary met and later married in 1994 on a sailing trip in the British Virgin Islands. He took up scuba diving for his trips to the Islands of the Caribbean, Honduras and Belize. He also loved deep sea fishing and traveled many times to Costa Rica and Cabo to fish. He was happiest outdoors and was an avid sportsman. He would hunt elk and pheasant and had several German shorthaired pointers over the years to assist. He would go riding on his ATV with his buddies and trek on and off trails in Summit, Eagle, Lake and Pitkin counties. He and Mary resided near Sloan's Lake in Denver, close to the things they liked to do in the city. He liked going to the Bronco games and spring training to see the Rockies and play golf. He played hockey as a kid and when the Avalanche came to town, he had season tickets. He and Mary also attended the theater and concerts at DCPA and enjoyed dining downtown.
Ron had pulmonary fibrosis, a progressive lung disease that he battled for over 4 years. He passed away on July 28, 2023, from its complications.
Ron supported River Deep Foundation, an organization dedicated to helping military veterans and others who have experienced physical, emotional or psychological trauma. The organization helps them heal and re-engage in life through adventure, recreation and support.
