Russell Lloyd Fortna, a native of Denver, passed away on October 10, 2022 at the age of 71 in his home in Unincorporated Adams County. He was born to the late Lloyd L. and Wanda E. Fortna on April 9, 1951. Russell was an Eagle Scout and graduated from Lincoln High School in Denver in 1969 and also took classes at Emily Griffith High School. He received a Bachelor's degree from Southern Colorado State College in Pueblo, CO in 1973 where he studied business. Russell met his wife Barbara M. Gurovich at Southern Colorado State College. They married June 23, 1973 and relocated to metropolitan Denver.
Russell had many jobs as a young man, working as a Caddie at Pinehurst Golf Course and as the Elevator Operator at the main Denver Public library on Broadway. After graduation, he managed automotive departments for various dealerships and then started his own business as a Distributor/Owner for Mac Tools which he operated for nearly 25 years.
Russell's main hobby was fixing things, some of which he also broke. He loved to camp, garden, hunt, go to car shows with his 1969 Dodge Super Bee, spend time on tractors, in his woodshop, or with his welder. The ideal day for him was a day helping a friend or a complete stranger fix something or solve a challenge. The word stranger was not in his vocabulary. Anyone was worth helping.
Russell is survived by his wife, Barbara M. Fortna and his two children, Valerie and Joseph (Heather), both living in metropolitan Denver. He was also survived by his brother Dennis (Rhonda), his sister Janet Rossi (Jack Middeker), his sister-in-law Arlene, and his granddaughters Taryn, Klara and Leah. Russell was preceded in death by his oldest brother Steven. Russell was blessed to have many surviving cousins, nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews, and the best friends and neighbors a man could hope for.
In lieu of any flowers or tokens of compassion, Russell was a passionate donor to the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals or ASPCA and also to the American Diabetes Association and any donations in his memory would be beautiful.
A memorial celebration will be held at Newcomer East Metro Chapel at 190 Potomac Street in Aurora, Colorado at 11:00 AM on Saturday, October 29.
