Samuel William Jones passed away in Colorado on May 31, 2018 and met his Lord and Savior. He is now resting in the arms of Jesus and walking the streets of gold, now that his work here on earth is done. Sam (Bill) was born in the hills of Virginia. His parents were Samuel H. Jones and Emily Quesenberry Jones. He enlisted in the Navy, serving as a Seabee in the South Pacific. He moved to Brownsville, Texas where he worked as a head shrimper, eventually becoming captain of this own boat that he named "First Commandment". He also worked for Union Carbide. Samuel was a proud WWII Veteran.
He began writing poetry. In his poem, "God's Great Gifts Grow", he writes, "I planted a smile, waited a while; I bet I got plenty, maybe twenty, in return. It wasn't outrageous, just contagious. I know they grow..a lesson for us to learn."
Another poem, "I love to kneel and feel him near, I love his light so bright and clear, and then at night when all is quiet to raise my eyes toward the sky above and praise my God for his wonderful love."
He founded Tex-Mex Ministries in 1983, dedicated to serving the residents of colonias in northern Mexico. Every week he, volunteers, contributors and his church, In Our Father's House, delivered supplies, building materials, purified water, clothes and food. As well as the construction of several homes, arranged for visits by doctors, nurses and dentists to provide free health care.
He received the Spanish Citizen Award, a certificate of excellence for "20 years of Christian Service for the Souls of Christ" from Sen. Eddie Lucio. He was presented with an honorary plaque, greetings from national, state and local figures, and a United States flag that had flown over the Capital Building in Washington, D.C.
