Shirley L. Birdsong

May 16, 1926 — May 3, 2021

Shirley Loreen Delores Birdsong

On May 3, 2021 a precious mom, grandma, aunt and friend passed on to be with her beloved husband Robert T. Birdsong (Bob), son Allen and play a round of golf. Born, May 16, 1926, Shirley learned to survive the poverty and extreme difficult circumstances resulting from the depression.

When she was 23 she married Bob and began her journey through life bearing 5 children with wit, courage, love, grace and unending devotion to her family and friends. For 50 plus years, Bob and Shirley showed love and kindness to their children, grandchildren, family and friends and were an example of how to be in life. They were unwavering in their loyalty to family and friends.

Throughout her life, Shirley was strong, smart, curious, interested in people, creative and always learning. She started the Buzz Book in high school for Washington High School students in Sioux Falls, SD. She was a voracious reader and could remember many details. After reading something new she was eager to share. She lived on a farm near Sioux Falls, SD and loved animals. She helped care for her children's dogs throughout her life. She took painting classes and created beautiful pictures.

She loved golfing with her husband, sons and grandkids, fishing with family, botchy ball with John, playing on a family softball team with her daughters, while her husband was the coach, to name a few. Shirley was a joy to be with and family members and friends eagerly sought her company through all her years.

An example, of Shirley's strength, courage and love was shown when she lost her husband Bob and son Allen within a few years of each other. Each time she lost family members and friends she came back from her pain to enjoy this precious life even more.

She left gifts of love and kindness through out her life. During her final days her hope was for all to be kind and loving to each other. She was filled with gratitude for all the people in her life and wanted everyone to know.

Born 1926 in Jasper, Minnesota to Jessie (Wells) Hanson and Oscar Hanson. Married to Robert T. Birdsong June 16, 1948.
