Ted Hoyer

February 1, 1946 — April 13, 2020

Dr. Theodore John "Ted" Hoyer of Denver, CO, passed away on April13, 2020, at the age of 74.

Ted was born on February 1, 1946, in New York City, to the late Theodore and Norma Hoyer. Ted lived in many places throughout his life including Michigan, Illinois, Oregon, and briefly Hawaii. Most of his life was spent in the Denver, CO area where he loved spending time outdoors, especially camping, hiking, biking, and cross-country skiing. Throughout his career, Ted served as a Director of Christian Education, Special Education Teacher, and ultimately after attaining his PhD he spent the rest of his career as both a School and Private Practice Psychologist. This was his passion, and he did tremendous work helping children and adults, especially those who had experienced trauma and abuse.

Ted was remarkably intelligent and kind. He was incredibly funny, with a dry sense of humor that sometimes caught people off guard. Ted had a deep and immense love for his family. He always listened intently to people with great compassion and without judgment. He was supportive of the dreams of his loved ones and was the consummate encourager. A lover of good music and books, he was often found quietly reading with classical music playing in the background. He had a beautiful baritone voice and enjoyed singing with his family who shared his musical gift. Ted enjoyed the simple pleasures in life and was happiest when surrounded with family, especially with his beloved granddaughter Alyson. Ted may best be remembered for his warm and welcoming smile, and his infectious laugh.

Ted was preceded in death by parents Theodore and Norma Hoyer, stepfather Ernest Heideman, and brother Robert Hoyer. He is survived by daughter Michelle O'Brien and son-in-law Mark, granddaughter Alyson, step-sons Joshua Young (wife Rachel and daughters Mira and Zadie) and Michael Slaughter, sister Elizabeth Tepe, sister-in-law Lana Hoyer, nieces Cara McCulley, Sara Hoppes, and Jeanette Hoyer, nephews Carl Hoppes and Steve Hoyer, numerous great-nieces and great-nephews, and many beloved friends.

Committed throughout his life to helping others through both professional endeavors and volunteering, his legacy continues through his request for memorial donations to the following organizations:
