Ted was born in Kansas City, Kansas to Leon Elbert McCarty and Edith Hazel Moore. Ted's mother married Stephen L. Ankle who moved the family to McDonald, Kansas. Ted graduated McDonald, Kansas High School in 1956. In 1959 Ted joined the Air Force of the United States of America where he served until 1962. Ted and his family moved to Colorado where Ted joined the Aurora Police Department in 1966. Ted retired at the rank of Division Chief in 1991.

Preceded in death Ted's beloved wife of 40 years Sharon Ann McCarty, brother Wayne McCarty and sister Darlene McCarty Vyzourek.

Ted is survived by his five children Troy Anthony McCarty, Lisa Angelique Thorn (David), Michael Corey McCarty, Donald Trevor McCarty (Jennifer) and Lori Nicole Haakenson (Russel). He also has nine grandchildren Taylor N Osborne (Andrew), Tyler N Thorn (Kathleen), Kiernan M McCarty, Lauren A McCarty, Brooke Lynn Haakenson, Jaedon T McCarty, Alexander M Haakenson, Ethan T McCarty and Alyssa N Haakenson and one great grandson, Zachary N Thorn.

Ted had a passion for fishing, especially with his dear friends at Lake McConaughy enjoyed reading, especially Lee Child's Jack Reacher novels. He was a member of the Erie United Methodist Church.
