Thomas J. Monheim
1943-2024
Born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, in 1943 to Robert and Mildred Monheim, Tom never lost his 'Burgh accent, especially during Steelers games. After graduating from Duquesne University, Tom served as a logistics officer in the United States Air Force for 26 years. During that time, he had 19 assignments throughout the United States, Greece, and Germany. He retired as a Colonel in 1992. He subsequently served in various management positions at IBM, Loral, and Lockheed Martin.
In addition to his military and civilian careers, Tom was proud of his marriage to his one true love, Katherine J. Monheim. Tom met Kathy in kindergarten, teased her during middle school, dated her during college, and remained in love with her during their 55 years of marriage. Tom and Kathy had two children and five grandchildren, whom they doted on ceaselessly. Tom's advice to anyone who became grandparents was to get on the floor and play with the kids “at eye level,” which he did every chance he could.
When he wasn't playing with his grandchildren, Tom spent his retirement volunteering at his church, exploring the outdoors, and spending time with the rest of his family. He ran a marathon at 60, backpacked in the Peruvian Andes at 64, rafted the Grand Canyon at 72, and hiked in the Rocky Mountains until he was 80. He also gave generously of his time and resources to those in need, especially those experiencing hunger and difficult pregnancies.
Tom is survived by his two brothers, Bob and Bill; his two children, Tom Monheim and Melissa Randall; his daughter-in-law, Cathy Monheim; and son-in-law, Gregg Randall. Tom is also survived by his five grandchildren: Kristen Anderson, Zachary Monheim, Garren Randall, Grason Randall, and Kyle Randall. Tom is preceded in death by his loving bride, Kathy.
