IN LOVING MEMORY OF URSULA I. PETERSON
(April 14, 1937 – February 10, 2019)
Ursula Irmtraud Annamarie Peterson (nee Marschhauser) passed away peacefully, on February 10, 2019, at Swedish Medical Center in Englewood, Colorado, after a courageous battle with breast cancer and a lifetime of love and friendship, at 81 years of age. She was born in Frankfurt, Germany on April 14, 1937. During World War II, she and other young German children were sent to the farms and countryside with their teachers, to learn and continue with their studies, as best as possible.
Ursula was baptized at an early age in Germany. Later, as an early teen, she was confirmed in St. Peters Gemeindee Church in Frankfurt. While in Germany, she worked for the United Restitution Organization in Frankfurt, which provided compensation to Jewish and other claimants after World War II, as well as for Degussa, a metallurgical company which determined the quality of precious metals, such as gold, silver and titanium.
She left Germany to work in the banking industry, which included the Associated Banks of Europe, in London and Mexico City, and the German South American Bank, AG. While in London, Ursula attended a finishing school for young women. In 1957, Ursula emigrated to the U.S. and she was extremely proud of her naturalization, presented to her on February 26, 1993, by the U.S. Immigration and Naturalization Service, Denver District Office.
Ursula met Glenn Peterson, a native of Denver, who was also serving as Swedish Consul in the Rocky Mountain region, and they married on November 22, 1978. During their 40 years of a loving marriage, the couple traveled widely and independently around the world, enjoying innumerable cruises and having several royal audiences with the King and Queen of Sweden, His Royal Highness, Carl XVI Gustaf and Queen Sylvia, a German native, at the Swedish Royal Palace in Stockholm. A particularly noteworthy trip was in 1982, when, upon a special invitation from the Swedish King and Queen, Glenn and Ursula attended the baptism of Princess Madeleine, in the Swedish Royal Palace Chapel.
As many of her friends know, Ursula had a spunky, witty and outgoing personality. She was loved by all for her vivacious and energetic spirit. She participated for decades alongside Consul Glenn Peterson, in the functions and activities of the Consular Corps of Colorado, always with a sunshine personality.
Ursula loved attending parties and numerous social events, through her membership in several organizations, including Welcome to Colorado (an international women's organization), the Belcaro Free Church Ladies' Group and the Gaylord Girls (a local, neighborhood group). She enjoyed sharing her German heritage, as well as speaking her fluent Spanish and was always informed about international affairs.
Ursula also had a lifetime love of the outdoors and the Colorado Rocky Mountains, in particular. She and Glenn spent half of their time at their cozy mountain home, Buck Park, near Bailey, Colorado, and the other half, at their beautiful home in Denver, from which they enjoyed attending social events and international activities, such as through the Consular Corps of Colorado. At their mountain home, Ursula loved the wild animals and hummingbirds. She proceeded to name each of the chipmunks, which came scampering from their dens whenever she called them, to be fed of all things, animal crackers, of course!
In addition to her loving husband, Glenn, Ursula is survived by her step-son, Donald Glenn Peterson, as well as by her step-daughter, Nancy Elaine (John) Easterling. Her passing leaves a void in her family, as well as within her friendship groups, to which she dedicated her life. Those who knew her will never forget the brightness she brought to so many lives.
A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, March 16, 2019 at 10:00 a.m. at Newcomer West Metro Chapel, 901 S. Sheridan Blvd., Lakewood, CO 80226, Rev. John Easterling officiating.
