Vassilis Arapkiles

Vassilis "Vass" Arapkiles, born to Greek immigrant parents on June 11, 1926 in Denver, passed peacefully at home on the morning of February 17, 2008. He graduated from West High School in 1944. After serving in the United States Army in the Philippines and Japan, he attended the University of of Colorado, earning a degree in Mechanical Engineering.

He married Irene Demos of Colorado Springs on February 24, 1942. They had four children-- Strat Arapkiles (Megan) of Broomfield, CO; Demi Gardner (the late Tom), of Mesa, AZ; Eleni Arapkiles (Tim Hogan) of Boulder, CO and Tina Arapkiles (Patrick Healy), of Boulder, CO. He and his grandchildren shared love and joy, and all six of them have inherited his great optimism-- Ali and Nick Arapkiles, Ian and Dylan Garner, and Teelin and Nora Healy. They loved their doting "Papou". Vass and his sisters, Theano Peros and Martha Zervos, along with their children, cherished each other his entire life. His undying devotion to his family never wavered.

Throughout Vass' life, he was a loyal and active member of the Greek Orthodox Church of Denver. He often helped maintain the church buildings and grounds. He participated on numerous committees, was a member of the Parish Council and served as President.

Vass' career in the engineering field spanned over 35 years. Upon retirement, he embarked on a new career teaching Engineering at Arapahoe Community College.

He had many passions, including golf, travel, photography, music and dancing. He could fix anything and he was a highly skilled mechanic and builder.

Vass lived with humble courage after a tragic injury in 1994, inspiring all who knew him.
