Vernon Nyby of Louisville, Colorado, was born on April 8, 1923 to Nels John and Petrea (Sorensen) Nyby. The family lived on a farm in Livermore, Iowa and later moved to Humboldt where Vern received his education, graduating from high school in 1942.
In the fall of 1942, Vern enlisted in the US Navy. He was called to active duty in March, 1943 and served as an Aviation and Ordinanceman Third Class. While in the service, he received college education and training in Mt. Vernon, Iowa, Lawrence, Kansas and Las Vegas, New Mexico. He then served aboard the aircraft carrier, the USS Randolph until the end of WWII. Vern was honorably discharged from the US Navy on February 5, 1946.
In 1946, Vern moved to Southern California and worked as a hod carrier. Betty (Jensen) joined him there and they were married on December 6, 1947. Their first daughter, Becky, was born in 1949. Later that year, they moved back to their hometown of Humboldt, Iowa where Vern was employed by DeKalb Agriculture. In January, 1951, Vern was recalled to active duty to serve in the Korean Conflict. He received his honorable discharge on May 6, 1952 and returned to their home in Humboldt where daughters Barbara and Susan were born.
The family moved to Colorado in 1961, where Vern was employed by City Park Brookridge Farms and later with MoorMan Manufacturing, an agricultural company. Vern and Betty worked in their home-based business with the Shaklee Corporation for 30+ years, retiring in 2002 when they moved to the home of their daughter, Barb, and husband, Charlie Hanes.
Vern lettered in basketball and football in high school and was an avid outdoor sportsman - enjoying trapping, fishing and hunting. He also enjoyed watching the Denver sports teams - Broncos, Avalanche and Nuggets. He loved watching western movies and the history channel. Vern was known for his quick wit and his great sense of humor. Vern was a long time member of Augustana Lutheran Church, Tri-R Club, USS Randolph Association and VFW Mile High Post # 1771.
Vern is survived by his wife, Betty, three daughters - Becky Nyby, Barbara Hanes (Charles), Susan Doyle (Terry) and granddaughters, Katy and Krista Doyle. He is also survived by one brother, Royal Nyby (Irma), of Marysville, California in addition to numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, three half-sisters and two half-brothers.
