Veronica Mary Weins, age 93, passed into her new life on July 24, 2024, at the Gardens of Columbine in Littleton, CO. Veronica Mary DeSmet was born on a farm near Larchwood, Iowa, on January 4, 1931, to Emma and Ted DeSmet. She was baptized at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Larchwood and attended school there from first through twelfth grade, except for a short time when the family lived in Valley Springs, SD. Her faith and the church were always central to her life. After graduating from St. Mary’s high school in 1949, Veronica moved to Sioux Falls, SD for work. She began her career as an office worker at Fantles Department Store and later moved on to the office at the Morrell’s packing plant.
Veronica met a young college student and WWII veteran, Bob Weins, at the popular ballroom, the Arkota. Veronica and Bob married in November of 1950 at the Church of The Little Flower in Sioux Falls. They immediately left for Colorado Springs as Bob had been called up to serve during the Korean conflict. Bob was then deployed to Alaska and was serving there when Veronica gave birth to their first child. They were blessed with four more children. Veronica not only made sure that all her children received a Catholic education but also modeled a good Christian life for all of them. She was a loving wife and mother, could be honest to a fault, cared for those around her, and attended and contributed regularly to the parishes to which she belonged.
The family lived in Sioux Falls, Watertown, and Aberdeen, South Dakota before moving to Littleton in 1972 where Veronica was a founding member of St. Frances Cabrini. Veronica served on the Arts Committee at St. Frances for many years, assisting with sewing hangings and other tasks. While in Littleton, she made many friends through her Avon sales work. She studied at Arapahoe Community College to refresh her typing and business skills and then took her AA degree to her work as a litigation assistant at Johns Manville.
Veronica was an accomplished seamstress who sewed many of her family’s clothes, made window treatments for family homes, and crafted home decorations. In addition to her love for her family and her church, she enjoyed bowling, playing bridge, counted cross stitch and crochet. She filled her home with beautiful counted cross stitch designs and crocheted many afghans - at least one for each of her children and grandchildren. She made many friends through her bridge playing and bowling!
Veronica lost her father, mother, three brothers and her beloved husband Bob. She is deeply missed by her sister, Jane Heirigs and brothers Don (Susie) and Dean (Nancy) DeSmet and her five children: Lynne (James) Young of Northfield, MN, Sandy (John) Weins-Kersten of Aberdeen, SD, Mike (Chris) and Jim, all of Littleton, and Tom of Buckeye, AZ. She is also survived by seven grandchildren: Erin Young Koernig, Robert Young, Justin, Caitlin, Christopher, Lexi Weins, Megan Bradley, and six great-grandchildren.
A visitation for Veronica will be held on Thursday, August 8, from 3 to 5 pm at the west chapel of Newcomer Funerals, Cremations and Receptions, 901 S. Sheridan Blvd, Lakewood, CO 80226. The funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11:00 am on Friday, August 9, at St. Frances Cabrini Catholic Church, 6673 Chatfield Ave., Littleton, CO 80128.
