Violet C. Astuno

January 23, 1937 — August 15, 2021

Violet (Acierno) Astuno passed away on August 15, 2021 after several years of battling diseases of Parkinson's, dementia and finally a recent fall which broke a hip. She received her angels wings on one of the holiest days of her Catholic religion, The Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary. Violet was 84 years old.

Violet was born in Denver, CO on January 23, 1937 to Pasqual & Helen Acierno on Mariposa Street in her mother's bed. She was the youngest of five children.

At the age of eleven, she got a little job in a neighborhood creamery just to make a little money.

After two years, at the age of thirteen, she worked for her brother George at his grocery store, "The Country Gentleman", until the age of fifteen. She walked across the street to a Safeway store and when doing this, told a little fib that she was older then her actual age. The manager asked her if she knew how to work a cash register. She operated it so fast, faster then the machine, and was hired on the spot.

After graduating from Our Lady of Mount Carmel High School, she began her forty year job with Safeway Stores until her retirement.

Violet was married in 1956 to Rocco Astuno, Jr. at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church and celebrated a 65 year life together. They had three children, Roxanne, Patricia and Denise. She was always known as Violet and her three girls.

After retirement from Safeway, her enjoyment was to do more travelling with her husband Rocco, which was all over the world. She loved to play slot machines and learned every trick there was about them.

Violet's family was the most important enjoyment of her life.

Violet was preceded in death by her parents, Pasqual and Helen Acierno and sisters and brothers, Theresa, George, Marie and Snooky. With a heartbreaking loss of a grandson, Michael Yannacito.

Survivors include her husband, Rocco; daughters, Roxanne (Jim) Matheson, Patricia (Richard) Shaw and Denise Astuno; grandchildren, Jared, Danielle, Stephanie and Jerry, Jr. and great-grandchildren, Dominique, Analei, Gianna and Mia.

Violet's Funeral Mass is Friday, August 27 at 10:30 am at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic Church, W. 36th Ave. & Navajo St., Denver. Entombment. Crown Hill Garden Mausoleum. Reception lunch following at Crown Hill Cemetery Reception Center.
