Wanita Selvy

Wanita Irene (Razor) Selvy
AKA: Betty, Mother, Mom, Grandmother, Grandma, Great Grandmother, Great-Great Grandmother, Sister, Aunt Nita and Friend.

Wanita left to be with God at age 88, on December 10, 2009. She is survived by her loving children; daughter, Bernita Selvy Curry, and son, Charles Ray Selvy; granddaughter, Sheri Curry DeVita, grandson, Josh Curry, grandson, Nicholas Selvy; 11 great grandchildren, Sierra, Terra, Michael, Shane, Cassandra, Nathaniel, Anabelle, Khalad, Alya, Amena, Mustaffa, and 1 great-great grandson, Riley, 2 sisters, Peggy Thies and Charlene Farmer and 1 brother-in-law Buford Selvy.

Wanita was born in Marion, KS in October, 1921. She lived there until graduating from high school.

Wanita's life was changed in 4th grade, 1930, when she met Bernard Selvy. Wanita and Bernard became best friends and married in 1942. What a gift for them to spend 77 years together before Bernard's death in 2007.

Music was a love of Wanita's. She was in many plays and operas in high school. After high school she was off to college to major in music. She taught marimba and piano for many years.

From 1942, after getting married, Wanita got to spend time travelling to many places with Bernard while he was in the Navy.

In 1947 the couple moved to Newton, KS. There 2 children were born, Bernita and Chuck. Wanita and Bernard added an interior decorating department into an existing business owned by Bernard's father, Ray Selvy. They lived there until 1960.

Colorado was beckoning Wanita and Bernard, so in 1960 they moved. This brought a great life change for the family. Wanita continued to pursue her career in interior decorating, working at The May D&F in downtown Denver. While working there she was honored to decorate many celebrities homes and condos all over the United States. In 1970 she decided to branch out and have her own business. With this business she was commissioned by previous customers and friends. Wanita made many friends from all walks of life who would have nobody but Wanita decorate their homes. After all she was the best. She even sewed curtains bed spreads and pillows for them. Everything matched.

While in Newton Wanita started singing with a Sweet Adeline chorus and different quartets. After the move to Colorado she sought out a chorus in Denver, the Sky Line Chapter. Wanita traveled to compete with 100's of choruses. This is an International organization. Her chorus won International competitions. Wanita was in many quartets. The last quartet was 'The Zip Cords', they competed and won many competitions across the country. The friends made became members of our family forever.

Nobody could ever go to Wanita's home without sharing in a meal, or at least a snack. Wanita was a fabulous cook and enjoyed making everything look beautiful. There was always something in the air that presented a warm friendly feeling. Opening her home to family and friends brightened her day as well as anyone who stepped through the door. She would always say that sharing with the family was most important.

The family is a member of South East Christian Church, now located in Parker, CO. Wanita and Bernard attended this church for at least 35 years. Wanita sang in the choir and preformed as requested for weddings, funerals and special events. Candle light service was one of her favorite events. Wanita's faith was strong and she showed her love in all her actions.

With retirement brought a move from Parker to Aurora. They moved into Heather Gardens Retirement Community where they lived until early 2007. Wanita was always available to decorate, coordinate colors and furniture in the entries on each floor of their 5 story building. Later they moved to a 3 story building where she again offered her decorating expertise.

At the time of Wanita's passing she was a resident at the Aurora Care Center. She received wonderful care there in the past 2 ½ years.

Wanita was a very gracious elegant lady and was loved by anyone and everyone that she met. Now she can dance and sing in heaven with Bernard.

Please pass this to any and all of Wanita or Bernard's family or friends.

The family has not made a decision on any Memorial Fund. If you would like to send any contributions please send them to Wanita's daughter, Bernita Selvy Curry, 14066 E. Stanford Circle, Unit H-10, Aurora, CO 80015. Bernita will then make certain that the proceeds are sent to the appropriate place.

We love you Mother.
