Eulogy for William Hackmann

William Amandus Hackmann was born in Rahway, New Jersey on November 26, 1945, and died at Lutheran Medical Center, Wheat Ridge, Colorado on February 7, 2020. He was the son of Amandus and Ethel Hackmann.
Bill lived his early years in Cranford, New Jersey. He attended Lincoln School and Cranford High School where he was a member of the Hi-Y, French Club and football team. He graduated from CHS in of June 1963 and continued his education at Rider College. In 1968, he graduated from Rider College with a B. S Degree in Commerce.
Upon graduation he was hired by Container Corporation of America who manufactured corrugated boxes. He stayed with CCA until he made one of his best decisions, which was to follow his sister, Carole, and moved Colorado. Bill continued his career in the manufacturing of corrugated boxes and retired from Smurfit-Stone in 2010.
A little bit about Bill. After his retirement, he volunteered for several years at St. Anthony's North Health Campus. He was in reception; answered questions and told people where to go.
Bill truly enjoyed his family and friends. He was a terrific son, brother, uncle, friend and a lover of dogs. He had a big heart and a sly sense of humor. The gathering of friends and family for holidays, graduations, birthdays, and major sporting events were always a big part of his life. He loved a good time!
Bill had the same demeanor and caring as his Dad. He gave freely of his time and cared dearly about those who were close to him and those who needed help. He, like his father, was a humanist.
After he was settled in his own home, Bill adopted his first Golden Retriever and named him Hawkeye after one of the characters in MASH. Hawkeye was followed by Trapper and Radar. No longer wanting to raise a puppy, Bill looked around for a more mature dog, and imported a dog from Turkey named Watson. He decided not to change his name. Watson, like the rest of Bill's dogs, went to school. All of his dogs graduated with honors. If you were lucky enough to be adopted by Bill, life just didn't get much better.
Bill is survived by his sisters Carole Page of Centennial, Colorado and Joan Hackmann-Gaul of Malvern, Pennsylvania. Bill was a caring uncle to many nephews and nieces living in Colorado, New Jersey and Georgia.
Two of Bill's favorite charities were the Special Olympics Colorado, PO Box 13979, Denver CO 80201-3979 and the Golden Retriever Rescue of the Rockies, 15350 W. 72nd Avenue, Arvada CO8007.
A memorial service will be held at Newcomer, 901 S. Sheridan Blvd., Lakewood CO on Thursday, February 13th at 6:00 p.m. A reception will follow the service.
