Wylie Odell Tindle Jr.

February 18, 1933 — May 4, 2018

Wylie Odell Tindle Jr. sadly passed away on May 4, 2018. He liked to describe himself as "a hard-working country boy." He was born on February 18, 1933 in Silas, Alabama (Choctaw County), the oldest child of Annie Ruth (Taylor) and Wylie O. Tindle Sr. He came from a sharecropper's family and was born in his grandmother's home. "That's how it was in the 30's."

Wylie left home in May, 1950 to join the US Navy at age 17, just six weeks before the beginning of the Korean War. He took his Basic Training at the Great Lakes Naval Training Station in Illinois and found himself a veteran of the War within six months of joining. He served proudly on the USS Forrest B. Royal DD-872 (Destroyer Division).

He met his first wife Edith in Massachusetts. Wylie and Edith had three sons: Michael, Randall, and Tommy. After his naval service, Wylie and the family returned to Mobile, Alabama. He took a position with the Air Force as a civil service employee and served in that capacity for the next thirty-eight years in Alabama, North Carolina and Colorado. In 1976 he married Phyllis (her children Christine and Robert). He retired in 1993 to care for Phyllis and he still was able to serve in the US Army Reserve. Phyllis passed away in 2001. Wylie met Mary in 2002 and they married in 2011.

In his retirement, Wylie worked as a consultant on insurance freight claims, taught at the Emily Griffith Opportunity School, he was an active member of the NARFE , AFAFC and was active in neighborhood development, especially around Utah Park.

"Between the three marriages," Wylie had ten grandchildren and twelve great-grandchildren, five step-grandchildren and six step great-grandchildren. He leaves behind his wife Mary (her children Elizabeth and Nancy), his sons Michael (Elizabeth) Tindle and Tommy (Cathy) Tindle, his brother Gene Tindle, and his beloved little sister Gloria (Gianni) Buzzeo.
